Moxham Mountain with the Boys

Kyle, Lewis, Andy, and I took a one night trip to Moxham Mountain. It was great.

'Kids on the Trail!' said it was a 5 mile round trip, and my GPS agreed with that. Another 0.5mi down the road there is a DEC campsite, where we planned to stay the night, though we briefly considered carrying packs up to the summit and camping along the trail somewhere.

We left as soon as Kyle got home from school. The boys napped for most of the 90 minute drive. After a quarter of a mile of Lewis complaining, I finally realized he usually eats a big snack at 3:30 every afternoon. I set a 7 minute timer and told him to stuff his face. He raced the rest of the way up the mountain without complaint.

I love hiking with anyone, but Lewis is a crack up on the trail.
I let him climb onto only one rock on the way up, and two more on the way down. By that point I was racing the sun, but I was also convinced we'd be back here as a family soon, so I promised to let Lewis climb up *all* the rocks on the next trip.

Andy shot this at the same time, from the other side of the rock.
Our destination was the top of that rocky cliff to the right of Lewis's head.

There were many good views along the way. You can see the ski trails on Gore Mtn here. It was very windy, though, so it wasn't hard to convince Lewis to keep moving along.

When his belly is full, Lewis just moves right along. It snowed last week, as you can see.
I wasn't sure Kyle would be excited about hiking with Lewis and no friends. When I tentatively asked him whether he'd be interested in a 5 mile hike with just Lewis and me, he didn't even hesitate. He loves hiking with Lewis, and they make a good duo.

WIND!

Had Alan been with us, there would be one fewer tree on top. I was impressed at how vertical the trees was. It was very windy on top.

Despite my best attempts fiddling with Google's filters, this is one of those photographs that doesn't really capture what it looked like in person. The ponds and the stream through that marshy meadow were striking. It was just a lovely view.

Kinda makes you want to backpack all through that valley and ponds, doesn't it?

There was a rock ridge maybe 20-30' long. I told Lewis it was a buried stone dragon, and we were walking along its spine.
When I suggested he jump off the rock, Lewis just shook his head and laughed. Andy pointed out that this rock has been used in many analogies. You can tell from all the lichening.

Although we got to camp before sunset, there was enough up-and-down to get this picture, which I like.

Cheddar broccli chicken with rehydrated carrots for dinner. It was car-camping on a backpacking trip, and it was great!

Andy got a fire going, which Kyle put to good use.

7 s'mores were eaten. I roasted zero marshmallows but still managed to eat two, because my boys are nice to me.

Everyone stayed warm all night. At 5:30 Lewis was sure it was morning, since it was getting light, and wanted to hike up the mountain again. I told him to hop in my hammock with me and we would chat for an hour to let people sleep in a little more. He fell right back asleep. I dozed in and out of dreamland (in which it was raining, and many hikers were passing through our campsite, despite it not being on the way to anywhere).

Kyle got up around 6:45, and Andy got up shortly after that. We had teriyaki beef breakfast burritos, then drove further down the road to another primitive campsite, for future reference. Then the long drive home, arriving at 11 (and immediately buying some baked goods from a gaggle of redheaded girls, supervised by Camille).
